To mark the 50th anniversary of independence of most West African countries,
Charles Gallery - Wesley Hourdé is pleased to present a selection of works from these regions
. Among them - here, a superb Baule statue of Côte d'Ivoire and the striking expression from a large collection colonial. Bambara a statuette of a surprisingly modern plastic arts illustrate Mali while Nigeria will be represented by a statue Igbo monumental, comparable to the collection of Grunne Baudoin.

This year, the gallery presents MaineDurieu ra exposure rich and diverse. She will talk a fine collection of ancient sculptures Lobi of Burkina Faso, emotional naturalism with a selection of pieces chosen for the purity of their form and simplicity, like churinga, thin boards covered with geometrical carvings, made by the Aborigines Australia.

Black Seat

If the primary function of the seat evokes the comfort or repose of the man, he is also a symbol of authority, exchanges or observance. In many African societies, the head plays a crucial role. He removed the many dangers of a hostile soil, he accompanied the break or the arguments, it connects man to the ground, he embodies authority, ancestors or totem animals. For
"sublimated forms, stamped with a large variety and freedom of sculptors, plus skates, wear, repairs or successive embellishments that shape the lives of several owners.
Each seat is a unique piece in the tribal body.
Exposure Black Seat, far from wanting to complete, is the result of many years of research and brings together some fifty different items selected for their elegance, their rarity and antiquity.

Horses of Korèdugaw
of
Mali


The Korèdugaw, jesters ritual form une classe à part des autres sociétés initiatiques bamana.
Intervenant, en groupe, dans tous les événements de la vie sociale, ils tournent en dérision, par leur comportement et leurs paroles licencieuses, tous les pouvoirs, tous les savoirs, toutes les situations. Affublés de colliers faits de graines ou de vertèbres de poisson, d’une chemise en filet à laquelle sont accrochés têtes de calao séchés, morceaux de calebasses, vieux ustensiles, ils portent quelquefois sur le visage un masque « hyène » ou un masque « cheval ». Enfin, ils chevauchent le korèdugasò ou « cheval du Korèduga » représentant une tête de cheval au a stick, and behave like riders on a spirited horse, causing chaos and hilarity in their wake. A wide selection of these horses will be presented, dating from the second half of the twentieth century. From different regions of Mali, they are wooden, some metal completely covered, others richly adorned with carved brass. Some are realistic, others full of inventions. All are different.

A catalog written by Jean - Paul Colleyn accompanies the exhibition.
