The Evangelist Matthew quotes several passages from the Old Testament that refer to him as Jesus. Matthew tells us something very famous in the history of Jesus, or that Judas the traitor with remorse decides to make 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, they refuse, then Judas threw the 30 pieces and suicide. The chief priests bought the field with that money. This passage is found in Matthew 27:3-10 :
27.3
Then Judas, which had betrayed him, seeing he was condemned, repented, and brought back the thirty pieces of money the chief priests and elders,
27.4
saying I sin, betrayed the innocent blood. They answered: What do we care? This is watching you.
27.5
Judas threw the silver coins in the temple, he departed and went and hanged himself.
27.6
The chief priests picked up and said, "It is not permissible to put into the treasury, since it is blood money.
27.7
And, after deliberation, they bought with them the field potter, to bury strangers.
27.8
Wherefore that field was called Field of Blood to this day.
27.9
Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet : They took the thirty pieces of silver, its value has been estimated, we estimated from the children of Israel;
27.10
and he gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord had commanded me.
Matthew us says here that this event was prophesied by the prophet Jeremiah. The problem here is that we have to look good this prophecy in the Book of Jeremiah, it can not be found.
In reality this is not the prophet Jeremiah who said this but the prophet Zechariah:
11.13
The Lord said: Cast it to the potter, the price at which they magnificent me felt! And I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter. (Zechariah)
Evangelist Matthew was so wrong prophet, instead of attributing the prophecy in Zechariah who is the real author, he falsely attributed to Jeremiah, who did not vote!
Christian theologians have acknowledged this mistake:
- Calvin
"I confess I do not know how the name of Jeremiah has met here, and do not torment me hard. Certainly the thing shows itself it was misused by putting the name of Jeremiah for Zechariah, because in Jeremiah, we do not find this, or anything that Approach Calvin. (cited Annotated Bible on Matthew 27:9)
- Bible Neuchatel:
" The following quotation is not found in Jeremiah, but in Zechariah 11.12,13. Some
tiny have corrected this mistake by entering the name of Zacharias, and others are simply the prophet, but the name of Jeremiah is undoubtedly genuine. To overcome this difficulty, we resorted to various assumptions worthless.
must see inadvertence, to which a passage from Jeremiah (Jeremiah 2.18) could easily give rise. "
http://epelorient.free.fr/nta/nta.htmlThis mistake leads us to ask ourselves seriously on the Holy Spirit said to have inspired the evangelists. The Holy Spirit is God for Christians can inspire the error?
And if Matthew was mistaken about how this passage can we be assured that it has not done elsewhere? How to trust?
