With the opening of the heathen to Christianity, an opening which took place mainly thanks to Paul who proclaimed apostle dens Gentiles (non Jews) after an alleged vision on his way to Damascus, a lively debate broke out between the members of the young Christian community: The pagans did they observe the Law of Moses or not?
It was during the Council of Jerusalem, which is the first Christian council, took place this debate. This fact is reported in Chapter 15 of the Book of Acts:
- 15.1
- Some men came down from Judaea taught the brethren, saying: If you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you can not be saved.
- 15.2
- Paul and Barnabas had with them a lively debate and discussion, and the brothers decided that Paul and Barnabas and some of them, go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.
- 15.3
- After being accompanied by the Church, they continued their journey through Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of pagans, and they caused great joy to all the brothers.
- 15.4
- arrived in Jerusalem, they were received by the Church, the apostles and elders , and they reported everything God had done with them.
- 15.5
- While some of the Pharisees, who believed rose up, saying he had to circumcise them, and require compliance with the law of Moses.
- 15.6
- The apostles and elders met to consider this matter.
- 15.7
- Much discussion has committed itself , Peter got up and said: Brethren, you know that long ago God made choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the Gospel and believe.
- 15.8
- And God knows the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit as to us;
- 15.9
- it made no difference between us and them, purified their hearts by faith.
- 15.10
- Now therefore why tempt ye God, putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
- 15.11
- But by the grace of the Lord Jesus that we believe to be saved in the same way they do.
- 15.12
- whole assembly kept silence, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul, who told all the miracles and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.
- 15.13
- When they had finished speaking, Jacques spoke up and said: "Brethren, listen to me!
-
- ...
-
- 15.19
- is why I believe we do not creates difficulties for those pagans who converted to God
- 15.20
- but that they write s' abstain from pollutions of idols, from fornication, from things strangled and blood.
- 15.21
- Because, for many generations, Moses in every city them that preach him, being read every Sabbath in synagogues.
- 15.22
- Then it seemed good to the apostles and elders, and the whole Church, choose among them and send them to Antioch, with Paul and Barsabbas, Jude called Barnabas and Silas, men among the brethren.
- 15.23
- They charged them a letter: The apostles, elders, and brothers, brothers of the Gentiles, who are in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia, hello!
- 15.24
- Having learned that some men went out from us, and that we had given no orders have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls,
- 15.25
- we decided to By the way, after we all together, to choose delegates and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
- 15.26
- these men who risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 15.27
- We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will announce their mouth the same things.
- 15.28
- For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and we do require you to load other than what is necessary,
- 15.29
- namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, blood, strangled, and fornication, things against which you will find much to keep you alert. Goodbye.
- 15.30
- So they, having taken leave of the church, went to Antioch, where they delivered the letter to the assembled multitude.
We thus see that this council has been organizing to end the controversy between Christians and non Christians whether Jews should or should not observe the Law of Moses.
We see in this passage that there were two opposing sides: one side the Christian Pharisees who insisted that the Act should be applied by the pagans as well as Jews , and on the other side other Christians close to Paul who believed that Gentile converts should not be under the Act.
The apostles decided to give the party because of Paul but by imposing certain COMMAND converted pagans, namely: "abstain from pollutions of idols, from fornication, from things strangled and blood."
The problem is that the apostles have unfortunately forgotten an important recommendation of Christ. Indeed Jesus had already told them of his ministry at:
- 23.1
- Then Jesus Speaking to the crowd and his disciples, said:
- 23.2
- Scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
- 23.3
- So be and observe whatever they tell you but do not ye after their works. As they say, and do not. (Matthew)
The apostles instead of following the recommendations of Jesus (Math23: 3) and rule in favor of the Pharisees in the Christian Council of Jerusalem and all follow what they say, inevitably have forgotten this and have opted for the 'Relief Act to Gentiles.
This oversight has led to the fatal error of millions of Christians and that until today!
